Rosemary Scott remembers the first call clearly: she was a teenager on retreat in Rampanalgas with the Living Water youth group. At the retreat’s end, one of the persons praying with her received a prophetic word from God:
“I have given you everything.
I have blessed your life.
Now....I call you to give yourself to me.”
They also shared an accompanying scripture passage from Jeremiah:
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
before you came to birth I consecrated you.”
Scott didn’t think much of the Word at first, but the scripture verse stayed with her. This was the first inkling of her calling, which turned out to be a vocation to the consecrated life.
The concept of vocation extends beyond priesthood and religious life. In reality, married life is a also vocation. Consecrated life is a vocation. Single life is a vocation. Vocation is the life we are called to live, whatever it may be.
“There are so many vocations, and every human being is created for a vocation… every call is a vocation, and we are all called,” Scott said. Turns out, the retreat was just the beginning of her call.
